Sensible organization is a must in order to increase efficiency while courting the kitchen, so it's not advisable to skimp on cabinet design or shelving. But you can also make minor adjustments to your kitchen's arsenal that will pay off every time you prepare a meal.

Save time and space with gadgets that pull double duty when it comes to meal preparation, and with tools whose primary objective it is to save you space and cutback on appliance hassles.

2 for the space of 1

Small kitchen gadgets that serve two purposes while just occupying the space of one tool can ease the cooking process by lessening clutter and quickening the pace. Ken Avella, operations manager for Philadelphia-based Fosters Homeware, sings the praises of the switchet, also called a spoontula, which is essentially a utensil boasting both a spoon and a spatula - an easy-to-use item that can quickly become a necessity.

Park the appliances

Buy an appliance garage to keep all of your commonly used mixers, gadgets and accessories out of the way to avoid countertop congestion, but still handy enough to be used as often as they're needed.

"You can put an appliance garage on your countertop with all of your gadgets [in] it, and they aren't seen but they are still plugged in all the time and easily accessible," says Laura Husni a designer at Kitchen Designers in New York.
