In Japan, sitting on the floor is common. Meals are held on the floor around a low table, and traditional ceremonies and events are all performed on the floor. The floor is a forgotten space in American homes where we lounge on couches, stools and loveseats. But an ecodesign company called Knoend has decided to bring the floor to the forefront with bean rockers.
The small, bean-shaped chairs are designed with body posture, connection with the ground and ease of breathing in mind. Studies have shown that resting and balancing on a curved shape helps a person stay aware of their posture. But if rocking and rolling isn't your thing, flipping a bean rocker upside down offers a fixed option.
The chairs may have been designed for the body but they keep the environment in mind. They're made with FSC certified maple plywood finished with natural linseed oil, and the cushions, which come in a variety of colors, are natural latex covered in organic linseed oil. Bean rockers are easily assembled and disassembled, so when you're tired of the bean and want to trash it, you can recycle the parts. Maybe it will sprout.
